Used properly, mechanical toothbrushes outperform manual toothbrushes because they can
- Make brushing your teeth fun
- Provide more scrubbing action
- Remove more plaque
- Reduce gingivitis
- Massage and stimulate blood flow to your gums
- Remove surface stains
- Whiten your teeth
- Remove food particles from hard-to-reach places, especially for those with braces and other dental appliances
Three exceptions
- Baby’s first teeth should be gently brushed with a soft-bristled, manual brush
- A manual toothbrush is easier to carry when traveling
- During a prolonged power outage, a manual toothbrush is better than not brushing
