Dr. Mike Answers Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Implant Procedures and Options

Hello, I am Dr. Michael E. Hughes.

Dr. Mike, Dentist with Hughes Dentistry

Dental implants allow for the replacement of one tooth or multiple missing teeth. The symptoms of tooth and bone loss are often hidden in plain sight. Missing teeth can inhibit one’s ability to chew and speak properly. Additionally, missing teeth can have a significant impact on self-esteem. At Hughes & Hughes Family Dentistry, we are able to place and restore dental implants for these reasons.

Dental implants rely on the quality and quantity of bone for success. The longer you are missing a tooth, the greater the chance the bone in the area has lost quality. Only a licensed dental professional can properly diagnose the quality and quantity of bone that is available and required for implant therapy. A 3D cone beam CT scan will be required for evaluation, and we can handle that on site. If you have been without teeth for a long period of time, do not let this worry you! There are additional procedures that may allow us to replace bone to still allow for dental implant therapy. Our staff and I will be with you every step of the way.

The dental implant process can vary in length. Every patient is unique. Once we gather the information needed, we will be able to evaluate your clinical situation and required procedures. On top of that, we will do everything possible to make you comfortable during the procedure and minimize any discomfort post-surgery.

Risk factors that may have an impact on implant success are smoking and diabetic glycemic control. When you come in for your consult, I will be more than happy to go into further detail to discuss your unique situation.

How long will the implant last? Implants are designed to last for many years and can be very successful! However, home care and maintenance is critical to keeping your mouth healthy even after replacing your teeth with implants. We will walk you through every step of the way in proper home care to keep your implant as healthy as possible! The staff at Hughes & Hughes Family Dentistry will help you in getting the names of any homecare products you need. (We offer many of them at our office as well!)

Losing all your lower or/and upper teeth can be a very scary situation for most people. Unlike in years past, you are not limited to removable prosthetics like dentures and partials. Believe it or not, this type of thing is not uncommon and can have a dramatic impact on someone’s life in a variety of ways. Again, I will tell you, we will be here for you every step of the way.
